John-Michael Gamble

Bio

John-Michael Gamble, PhD, is a Clinical Associate Professor in the School of Pharmacy at the University of Waterloo, with additional appointments as Associate Professor (status only) at the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Toronto, Assistant Clinical Professor in the Faculty of Medicine at McMaster University, and Adjunct Scientist at ICES. A pharmacist and pharmacoepidemiologist by training, he completed his PhD at the School of Public Health, University of Alberta, where his doctoral research examined the impact of restrictive drug coverage policies on pharmacoepidemiologic methods and health outcomes. He also holds an MSc in Clinical Epidemiology and a BSc in Pharmacy from the University of Alberta.
Dr. Gamble is Co-Director of the DEcode program (Diabetes Epidemiology: clinical outcomes and drug effects) and leads an active research program in pharmacoepidemiology and drug safety, focused on the comparative safety and effectiveness of medications used to treat type 2 diabetes. Using observational cohort and administrative claims data, his work spans comparative effectiveness, pharmacovigilance signal detection, and drug-safety methods, including studies of SGLT-2 inhibitors, incretin-based therapies, and insulin. He has authored or co-authored more than 90 peer-reviewed publications and maintains an active clinical practice in the Escalation of Care Diabetes Clinic at the Centre for Family Medicine Family Health Team in Kitchener, Ontario.
Dr. Gamble joined the CNODES Steering Committee in 2026, and has previously contributed to the network as a member of the Knowledge Translation Team. His research has been recognized with a New Investigator Award from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and a Clinician Scientist Award from the Canadian Diabetes Association, and he was named Primary Healthcare Researcher of the Year at Memorial University.
